A cosmetic injection by the name of Kybella has made an impressive entrance into the world of aesthetics. This new nonsurgical treatment, which is considered minimally invasive, addresses submental fullness with minimal downtime. For the right candidate, Kybella can very well be their solution to eliminating the appearance of their double chin.
Kybella is performed in a series and delivered by either a plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist. A series may range anywhere from two to five visits and are based on the patient’s aesthetic goals. According to medical professionals, the amount of visits are patient dependent and do vary.
Fifty-year-old Christina G., is one patient who is currently undergoing a series at the San Diego plastic surgery offices of Dr. D. Glynn Bolitho with his aesthetic nurse specialist, Elizabeth Reed. She was candid about her hesitation to follow through with her second visit because her results were excellent after the first series.
“I obviously didn’t know what to expect after my first Kybella treatment. I did have fullness which was visible the first few days, and then it receded about a week or so later,” she said. “My second series was scheduled seven weeks out, and I could not believe the dramatic improvement after six weeks. It was incredible. So much in fact, that I questioned whether or not I should go.”
The thoughts that Christina G. had were quite normal. Many patients do notice a visual improvement after their first session and contemplate going to their next visit.
“I ended up going because I trust Elizabeth, and she knows better than I do how the treatment works. Elizabeth was thrilled with my results, too but believed that a second series was important so I followed through with it,” she said. “And I’m so glad I did. Now, I’m six out since my last treatment and my results from this round are better than after my first series. Quite honestly, I didn’t think it could get any better.”
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid. A natural occurring molecule in the body, deoxycholic acid permanently dissolves fat thereby creating new chin definition. Many patients have welcomed a nonsurgical solution to address their submental fullness, including Christina G., after her 30-pound weight loss. Despite diet and exercise, her double chin remained. Now, with the help of Kybella, it’s gone.
“So now I need to book my third appointment with Elizabeth. I have no idea if I will need a final series for a touchup, but I’ll know soon enough,” Christina said. “My best advice for those having a Kybella treatment is to stick with it. Even though you’re tempted not to go to your next visit, just go because more improvement is on the way.”
