Results from a fractional skin resurfacing procedure helps produce more flawless skin.

Surgical Candidates:

Ideal surgical candidates for a fractional skin resurfacing are the following:

Consultation:

Your initial consultation with Dr. Bolitho will determine whether or not your skin care expectations meet the potential results of a fractional skin resurfacing treatment. Dr. Bolitho will work closely with you explaining his advanced laser techniques to achieve the most desired aesthetic outcome.

Treatment Procedure:

Dr. Bolitho typically provides a topical antibiotic for both during and after your procedure.

Before your treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to the laser treatment area and you will be provided with a light sedative.

Depending on the patient and their cosmetic needs, the procedure may last anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours.

Dr. Bolitho will apply the fractional laser therapy to selected areas of your face which were discussed during your consultation.  The therapy is done in “fractions” which offers your skin time to recover more quickly.

This state-of-the-art laser technology helps eliminate surface-level to moderate wrinkles on the face, neck and chest. This laser resurfacing is also used to rejuvenate hands.

Fractional Skin Resurfacing Recovery:

Following your procedure, Dr. Bolitho may apply sterile dressings to protect the treated areas and promote healing.  You may also be instructed to apply topical antibiotics.

Fractional skin resurfacing requires very little downtime in terms of recovery and may last about a week.  Treated areas may feel sunburned. Patients may also experience some swelling.

Within three to four days, your skin may feel itchy as it begins to heal and is replaced by new skin.  Avoid the urge to touch your skin to avoid any complications.

Days later, your skin will become dry and naturally peel off.

The results of this treatment unleash younger and smoother looking skin.

Resurfacing techniques can be both operative and non-operative.  Dr. Bolitho’s office offers patients a choice in what treatment would suit them best as well as offer the best aesthetic outcome.  Skin resurfacing helps address wrinkles and fine lines, age spots, and other canvas imperfections.

Skin Rejuvenation Procedures:

Dermabrasion Treatment Summary:

A dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing treatment which refinishes the top layers of your skin.  Dr. Bolitho uses a surgical scraping technique which helps smooth away the appearance of facial wrinkles and even scarring caused by surgery, acne or accidents.

Dermabrasion can be a solo procedure, but more times than not, is performed in conjunction with another procedure such as a facelift. This treatment can be used to refinish one area of skin irregularities, or if needed, a more comprehensive area(s).

Each patient’s needs are different and Dr. Bolitho will tailor the right dermabrasion treatment for you.

The goal of a dermabrasion treatment is to make any skin irregularity less visible and offer a more youthful appearance.

Treatment Candidates:

Ideal candidates for a dermabrasion treatment are the following:

  • Adult men and women
  • Those without active acne flare-ups
  • Those with lighter complexions generally have less post treatment discoloration

Dermabrasion Consultation:

In your initial consultation, Dr. Bolitho will begin to tailor the right dermabrasion for you.  He will review your overall medical history.

This office visit is a vital one because it’s your opportunity to be candid with Dr. Bolitho in where you can share your aesthetic goals and wishes. He will carefully examine your facial area.

Your initial consultation with Dr. Bolitho will determine whether or not your expectations meet the potential results for a dermabrasion.

Dr. Bolitho will explain that this treatment procedure does not produce facial rejuvenation surgical results such as a facelift.

Photos for your medical file will be taken by Dr. Bolitho’s nurse and automatically downloaded to a state-of-the-art software program called TouchMD. The photographs will reflect the areas of potential treatment and are then uploaded to a touch screen in your examining room. Dr. Bolitho will utilize this software to get more in depth information regarding your aesthetic wishes. Dr. Bolitho will explain the treatment process with this touch screen and discuss the latest techniques he uses to achieve the most desired aesthetic outcome.

If you choose to move forward with your treatment, Dr. Bolitho and his nursing staff will provide pre and post treatment instructions.  If necessary, Dr. Bolitho will also order prescriptions prior to your dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion Procedure:

Dr. Bolitho will discuss with you during your consultation whether or not a local anesthesia with sedation may be right for you.  In some instances, a general anesthesia may be used for a more comprehensive dermabrasion.

Depending on the area of treatment, this procedure time length may take a few minutes to under two hours.  There are patient cases where a dermabrasion is performed more than once for comprehensive scarring or a large treatment area.

A motorized procedure, Dr. Bolitho will choose whether or not a rough wire brush or diamond particle burr attachment will be best suited for your aesthetic goals. Dr. Bolitho will carefully end the resurfacing procedure once he reaches the most desired level.

Dermabrasion Recovery:

Following your dermabrasion, your skin will be red and swollen.  A day or two later, burning and aching may be present.  Dr. Bolitho can prescribe medication to minimize any discomfort you have. Depending on the extent of the treatment, speaking and eating may be challenging at first.

Dr. Bolitho will provide you with post treatment instructions to follow.

Swelling will stop at a week, but your skin may be pink and swollen for just under two months.  When you reach this recovery milestone, Dr. Bolitho will help advise you on what activities you can resume.

Most patients return to work in two weeks. Most patients get back to light workouts at two to three weeks, however, any sports involving contact may have to be postponed for a later timeframe. Swimmers generally need to wait up to two months to return back to an indoor pool.

Dr. Bolitho will advise you on when you can return to swimming outdoors since sun and wind should be avoided to optimize healing. You’ll also be guided on what types of makeup to wear.

Generally, it takes three to four months for pinkness to recede.  At this time, you will begin to see some of the dermabrasion results. As time progresses, you’ll notice more.

Potential Risks & Side Effects:
Resurfacing treatments may pose potential risks and side-effects.  While numerous successful dermabrasions are performed each and every year, there are post treatment risks and complications which may be related to this procedure.

These complications may include:

  • Infection
  • Pigmentation issues
  • Poor healing
  • Excessive scar tissue

Dr. Bolitho’s post treatment instructions will help reduce complications.

 Chemical Peel Treatment:

Dr. Bolitho’s office offers two types of chemical peels. The first is called alphahydroxy acids, otherwise referred to as AHAs, and the other, trichloroacetic acid, also known as TCA.

The goal of both peels is to treat sun damaged skin by removing its top layers.

And the results are a fairly quick turnaround, some calling it immediate.

TCA peels are offered at a different strength ranging from 1, 2.5 to 5 percent.

Typically, patients may be started with a more mild percentage since these peels are done in a series. If the patient tolerates the peel and didn’t have any reaction, then the next one is increased to the next level.

The depth of the peel relates directly to the percentage of the TCA.

A TCA peel generally takes 30 to 60 minutes to perform. And it does not require any anesthesia. Some patients, though, may prefer a light sedation to achieve an optimum comfort level.

The TCA peel is typically used on darker skin and may also be applied on the neck, as well.

The peel rejuvenates the skin, repairs damaged cells and stimulates collagen.

Stimulating collagen means skin will look more radiant and youthful.

AHA peels, also a non-operative procedure, improves skin texture by peeling away rough and dry skin. It’s a great antidote for sun-damaged skin.

Like the TCA peel, the AHA peel requires no anesthesia but some patients do have a light sedation.

Generally, those who have an AHA peel also have a series of up to several sessions.

Once the desired skin texture is attained, patients may use a low percentage of glycolic or fruit acid in their daily facial cleanser.
