A breast lift procedure, also commonly referred to as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure which can rejuvenate the appearance of a woman’s breasts. Those interested in this procedure typically have gone through pregnancy, breast feeding, or have lost a significant amount of weight which caused their skin to stretch and sag.
A breast lift can correct this, by lifting the breast up once again. Oftentimes during this cosmetic procedure, Dr. Bolitho has reduced the size of the areola.
While a mastopexy can help restore volume to your breasts, sometime patients often inquire about the insertion of breast implants for firmness, as well. Dr. Bolitho will discuss these considerations with you during your initial consultation.
The ideal surgical candidates for a breast lift include:
Your initial consultation with Dr. Bolitho is your opportunity to be candid regarding your postsurgical expectations. Clear communication is valuable and part of the cosmetic journey.
During your meeting, Dr. Bolitho will factor in details such as:
All these variables will help Dr. Bolitho determine what type of breast lift will suite you best.
Prior to surgery, Dr. Bolitho may recommend a mammogram due to age or medical family history.
Photos will be taken for your medical file and downloaded to a state-of-the-art software program, TouchMD. The photographs will reflect the areas of potential cosmetic surgical treatment and are then uploaded to a touch screen in your examining room. Dr. Bolitho will utilize this software to get more in depth information regarding your aesthetic wishes.
Dr. Bolitho will explain the surgical process with this touch screen and discuss the latest techniques he uses to achieve the most desired aesthetic outcome.
If you choose to move forward with your surgery, your patient coordinator will schedule a preoperative appointment. During this appointment you will meet with Dr. Bolitho once again to review your procedure and goals. You will also receive pre and postoperative detailed instructions. Dr. Bolitho will provide you with prescriptions prior to your surgery.
Typically, general anesthesia is administered during a breast lift surgery. However, for a minimal breast lift, a local anesthesia with sedation may be sufficient. Depending on the degree of a breast lift, the procedure may last anywhere from one to three hours.
Subject to the type of breast lift, Dr. Bolitho may use one of the below techniques:
If implants are being used to further reshape the breast, it is generally place under the breast tissue or pectoral muscle.
Following your procedure, you’ll have sterile gauze dressings applied to your breasts underneath your postsurgical bra. A few days after surgery, you may feel discomfort from bruising and swelling. Dr. Bolitho will prescribe medication to help alleviate any discomfort.
Generally, a postsurgical bra is worn 24 hours per day for 3 to 4 weeks.
Loss of sensation is normal following a breast lift. Typically, the numbness disappears after the swelling has receded. This usually takes six to eight weeks. For some patients, restored sensation may take longer.
During your recovery, Dr. Bolitho will provide you with postoperative instructions, including not to be lifting anything overhead for a few weeks.
Every patient heals at a different rate. Although you will be moving around in a day or two after surgery, you may feel sore for a few days longer. Depending on your type of employment, some patients return to work within a couple weeks.
In your initial consultation, Dr. Bolitho explains how cosmetic surgery is a journey. The transformations are wonderful, but patience is needed as your body adjusts to their new improvements.
