Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

This year Christina G. made a commitment to take care of her skin with the help of our aesthetic nurse specialist, Elizabeth. While implementing a day and evening regimen with SkinMedica, she has also undergone various treatments such as Botox, Voluma, chemical peels, and dermaplaning.

One of her most recent visits with Elizabeth was to try the newest cosmetic injection created by Allergan called Juvederm Volbella. The aesthetic goal of Volbella is to create subtle lip fullness while decreasing the appearance of vertical lines which are caused by age and sun overexposure.

A few weeks ago, Christina, 50, decided to give Juvederm Volbella a try.

What made you decide to schedule a Volbella treatment?

I have been under the care of Elizabeth for about a year now. She mentioned this new cosmetic injection called Volbella and how I might be a great candidate. Elizabeth shared how their patient coordinator, Karen, had it done and recommended I see her to learn of her experience. Karen raved about it and was really happy with the results. I did my own research when I got home on RealSelf, liked what I discovered, and decided to schedule an appointment.

What aesthetic changes did you want from your Volbella treatment?

I definitely wanted fuller lips but nothing that looked too overdone. I was searching for something more natural looking. I also had these vertical lines on my lower and top lips and hoped that could be resolved, too.

Did you find the Volbella treatment results satisfactory?

I absolutely did. The fullness was the perfect amount, and I also noticed a very subtle pout. The added fullness also made most of my vertical lines disappear. This treatment really rejuvenated my lip area, particularly the top portion, Cupid ’s bow. I am very happy with the results.

Were the injections painful?

I really experienced minimal discomfort. Elizabeth first applied a topical numbing agent to my lips and let it sit for about 25 minutes or so. Following this, she began the injection series which outlined the bottom and lower portion of my lips. The only area I felt a couple of the injections were the middle-top portion of my lips. Aside from this area, I barely felt a thing. Elizabeth also explained how Volbella had lidocaine in its ingredients which helped ease any discomfort.

How long did it take and what happened afterwards?

After the numbing agent, the actual injection series took about 15 minutes. After the injections, Elizabeth had me stay for about 10 minutes to apply ice packs. She also gave me an ice pack for the drive home. I continued the icing “on and off” into the evening hours.

Did you have any bruising or swelling?

I did not have any bruising, but I did have a little swelling which lasted a couple days. I met with people I already knew the very next day, and they didn’t even notice it. I really believe the icing helped considerably.

Would you recommend Volbella to others?

I absolutely will and already have. While it’s a great product, you need someone like Elizabeth or Dr. Bolitho do the injections so you receive the very best results.

Facial rejuvenation for the holiday season

Facial rejuvenation for the holiday season

As 2016 comes to an end, an array of festivities will be in full swing. In the weeks ahead, holiday parties, family gatherings, and other celebrations will fill the calendar. With these social engagements some may wonder what facial rejuvenation treatments are doable during this time-frame — meaning, facial rejuvenation with little to no downtime. This is important because this is the hustle and bustle time of the year.

The good news is there is a roster of treatments which fit into this category.

Cosmetic Injections

While cosmetic injections are minimally invasive, treatments should be performed in a medical setting by a healthcare professional adept in facial anatomy such as a plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist. Depending on the treatment chosen, results can be immediate such as a filler or appear days after the injection series such as Botox.

As one ages, they tend to lose volume around certain areas of their facial canvas such as their cheekbones. Created by Allergan, JUVÉDERM® Voluma™ is a cosmetic injectable gel which can help restore this volume in a subtle and natural-looking way. An injection series in the deep subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal region provides cheek augmentation to the mid-portion of the face and Voluma patients note that their results can last up to two years.

Also by Allergan is JUVÉDERM®, another hyaluronic acid cosmetic injectable gel, which is a leading choice to lessen the appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Quite new to the aesthetic world of cosmetic injections is JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC. This injection series specifically targets lip rejuvenation by adding subtle volume and lessens the appearance of vertical lines that occurs with age due to repeated muscle movement and solar exposure. Volbella which promotes both a youthful and subtle fullness offers results for up to a year.

One of the most popular cosmetic injections is Allergan’s Botox — another excellent choice for facial rejuvenation by minimizing the signs of aging in the following areas:

  • Horizontal forehead lines and wrinkles
  • Frown lines and wrinkles
  • Squint lines such as crow’s feet

As previously mentioned, it’s highly recommended to see a medical professional for these injections series. During a consultation, they will give their own recommendation after hearing the aesthetic wishes of their patients. The goal of all these injections is to have patients look refreshed with natural-looking results.

Skin Resurfacing

Chemical peels do a fine job in resurfacing the skin in terms of minimizing lines, diminishing age spots, and evening out skin tone. A chemical peel is a good choice if one is not attending an event for about 10 days. However, if this is not the case, another option is to schedule a Break Time Peel.

A Break Time Peel is a combination of dermplaning and a light chemical peel. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair and dead skin cells via a stainless steel tool and prepares the skin for the upcoming peel. Results from a Break Time Peel include the following:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Improved skin tone
  • Produces and promotes collagen

In less than an hour, patients can return back to their day.

During this very busy time of the year, there is indeed an array of facial rejuvenation choices.

Cosmetic surgery and treatments in 2016

Cosmetic surgery and treatments in 2016
With a new year, many individuals may consider this as an opportunity to improve their aesthetics through diet, exercise and cosmetic procedures. Recently, the New York Daily News covered an industrywide survey from an online website named RealSelf. This website is considered a portal which offers patients the opportunity to learn more about plastic surgery and nonsurgical options. With the assistance of plastic surgeons, potential candidates can have their questions answered as well as those who are patients in the midst of a procedure recovery.

A regarded site, RealSelf generated a survey to those working in the field in hopes it could glean a better understanding on where the plastic surgery trends were directed in 2016. According to the responses, five items stood out among the rest which included the following:

• Buttock augmentation
• Decrease bustline
Lip enhancement
Neck rejuvenation
Chin enhancement

Looking into 2016, these procedures appeared to be paving the way to a new year.

Body Contouring Procedures

When diet and exercise are unable to correct areas of the body where lax skin or stubborn fat deposits remain, many turn to body contouring procedures as an option. There are many procedures which fall into this category which may include the following:

• Breast lift
• Upper arm surgery
• Body lift
• Liposuction
• Tummy tuck
• Buttock augmentation

And more….

Buttock Augmentation

Board certified plastic surgeons are noticing that the desire for a more voluptuous chest size is now being shifted toward buttock augmentation. Implants are utilized for this surgery to enhance the size and curvature of the posterior region. According to the RealSelf survey, women prefer a smaller bustline and want to increase the shapely curves in their hind end.

Lip Augmentation

On the nonsurgical front, lip augmentation with the use of fillers is gaining attention, and according to the survey will attract new patients.

As reported by Jacqueline Cutler of the New York Daily News, “Thirty percent of dermatologists and 43% of plastic surgeons report they received more requests about lips in 2015 than 2014, another trend expected to continue.”

Neck and Chin Surgeries For Selfies

During 2015, there were an array of articles discussing how selfies were indeed an impetus for so many individuals wanting to undergo a facial and neck rejuvenation. Selfies have redefined how people see themselves, and most importantly, how they want to improve themselves.

While some patients may be tolerant with their facial aging for a period of time, the improvements they currently seek are surgically geared toward a more youthful neck and redefinition of the chin.

“And 68% of the doctors say they expect to have patients requesting neck and chin work in 2016,” Cutler wrote.

Plastic Surgery Consultations

While surveys can give insight as to where plastic surgery trends are headed, it’s highly urged and recommended that potential patients have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss the procedure(s) they are interested in. While learning more about the procedure, they can understand the recovery process.

Plastic surgery is a personal decision and one that should be made with thoughtful consideration.

Study Reveals Safest Procedures In Non-Operative Cosmetic Procedures

Doctor With Rx Prescription

Not long ago, Northwestern University published their national study on what they discovered to be the safest cosmetic procedures. Based on over 20,000 procedures and treatments in the nation, researchers found that minimally invasive procedures were deemed the safest.

Doctors who participated in the study were all dermatologists, so it’s important to point out that this study did not involve operative procedures performed by board certified plastic surgeons. The research conducted was only regarding non-operative treatments.

Nonetheless, as with any study, it offered information and statistics.

The study was championed by Murad Alam, M.D., who practices medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is a professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The complete study was also published in JAMA Dermatology.

Science Daily was one of the first media outlets to report the news.

Its reporter, Marla Paul of Science Daily wrote, “Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, including fillers, neurotoxins and laser and energy device procedures are exceedingly safe and have essentially no risk of serious adverse events….” She continued, “This is believed to be the first large, multi-center study that prospectively analyzed the rate of adverse events among tens of thousands of cosmetic procedures done at many centers around the United States by experienced dermatologists. These procedures are used to decrease the visible facial signs of aging.”

In the world of plastic surgery, a sample of this roster includes a neurotoxin such as Botox and fillers like Juvederm. Botox reduces the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily disengaging muscle contractions whereas Juvederm adds volume to plump up wrinkles and fine lines. Generally neurotoxins are used for the upper portion of the face where fillers are used on the lower portion.

The study did concur that a few patients, below one percent, experienced minimal bruising, swelling or reddening of the site treated.

Paul went on to report, “For many years, there was a perception that minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are safer than larger, more invasive cosmetic procedures. However, there was little evidence to back up this belief.”

In the study, Alam indicated, “The message for patients is that if you are thinking of getting one of these procedures, you are not indulging in something drastic or high risk.”

During a timeframe of 9 months, a total of 23 board certified dermatologists took part in the study with research data that included a total of 20,399 procedures. To keep track of treatments, the doctors were required to enter their patient data every single day.

The data included the following:

  • Type of treatment
  • Treatments performed per day
  • Indicating side-effects or complications
  • Describing the side-effects, if any

Following this, the data was collected by researchers by tallying the above information for calculations.

Paul reported, “While all the adverse rates were low, the rates for fillers at .52 percent were slightly higher than those for energy devices and neurotoxins. However, this is to be expected, the authors said because in the world of non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures, fillers are slightly more invasive than lasers and neurotoxins.”

During an era where individuals seek non-invasive treatments such as Botox and Juvederm, this study gave many patients, future patients, and healthcare professionals interesting insight.

Cosmetic injections, also referred to as a liquid facelift, remain a vital part to board certified plastic surgeons and their patients.
