A great lip enhancement treatment has arrived

A great lip enhancement treatment has arrived

For those who have wanted lip enhancement, but were concerned with an unnatural appearance, are now rethinking a treatment session since Juvéderm Volbella has arrived. Juvéderm Volbella was specifically created to rejuvenate the lip area, and patient feedback has been extremely positive due to its natural-looking outcome when delivered by a board-certified plastic surgeon or aesthetic nurse specialist. According to these aesthetic medical professionals, results last up to a year and are visibly immediate following the injection series.

Volbella is best described as a rejuvenation treatment which redefines and smooths the lip area while adding subtle volume.

Juvéderm is created by Allergan, the same company which manufactures Botox; however, like Juvéderm’s other products, Volbella also has the ingredient of hyaluronic acid in its filler. Also included in the ingredients is a numbing agent for patient comfort during the injection series.

Lips lose their volume and are prone to wrinkles over the years for a variety of reasons which may be due to sun overexposure, natural aging, and repeated muscle movement.

Volbella patient candidates will notice improvements following a treatment such as:

  • Fills and diminishes vertical lip lines
  • Subtle fullness to the top and lower lip area
  • Improve youthful lip volume with a natural appearance

Volbella has been considered by aesthetic medical professionals as the perfect option for those wanting to add slight volume to their lips without the results from traditional filler which lasts roughly six months.

Volbella is an exceptional option to rejuvenate lips while adding a subtle pout when injected by a trained medical professional. This is critical because a medical expert with sharp aesthetic skill and technique will determine the proper injection locations and amounts for optimal results. Injector experience is incredibly important.

Overall, patient feedback has indicated minimal swelling after an injection series. According to aesthetic medical professionals, Volbella does not absorb water as compared to other products which may very well be the primary reason; however, despite the minimal swelling, it’s still advisable to ice the area following treatment.

Although a numbing agent is in the Volbella ingredients, those delivering the treatment are still encouraged to apply a topical numbing cream such as Lidocaine to the entire lip area beforehand. The injection series is delivered slowly and meticulously along the upper and lower lip lines lasting 20 minutes or less. Once optimal results have been achieved, the treatment series is completed.

Patients are discovering that Volbella is their aesthetic pathway in enhancing and achieving lip rejuvenation.

Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

This year Christina G. made a commitment to take care of her skin with the help of our aesthetic nurse specialist, Elizabeth. While implementing a day and evening regimen with SkinMedica, she has also undergone various treatments such as Botox, Voluma, chemical peels, and dermaplaning.

One of her most recent visits with Elizabeth was to try the newest cosmetic injection created by Allergan called Juvederm Volbella. The aesthetic goal of Volbella is to create subtle lip fullness while decreasing the appearance of vertical lines which are caused by age and sun overexposure.

A few weeks ago, Christina, 50, decided to give Juvederm Volbella a try.

What made you decide to schedule a Volbella treatment?

I have been under the care of Elizabeth for about a year now. She mentioned this new cosmetic injection called Volbella and how I might be a great candidate. Elizabeth shared how their patient coordinator, Karen, had it done and recommended I see her to learn of her experience. Karen raved about it and was really happy with the results. I did my own research when I got home on RealSelf, liked what I discovered, and decided to schedule an appointment.

What aesthetic changes did you want from your Volbella treatment?

I definitely wanted fuller lips but nothing that looked too overdone. I was searching for something more natural looking. I also had these vertical lines on my lower and top lips and hoped that could be resolved, too.

Did you find the Volbella treatment results satisfactory?

I absolutely did. The fullness was the perfect amount, and I also noticed a very subtle pout. The added fullness also made most of my vertical lines disappear. This treatment really rejuvenated my lip area, particularly the top portion, Cupid ’s bow. I am very happy with the results.

Were the injections painful?

I really experienced minimal discomfort. Elizabeth first applied a topical numbing agent to my lips and let it sit for about 25 minutes or so. Following this, she began the injection series which outlined the bottom and lower portion of my lips. The only area I felt a couple of the injections were the middle-top portion of my lips. Aside from this area, I barely felt a thing. Elizabeth also explained how Volbella had lidocaine in its ingredients which helped ease any discomfort.

How long did it take and what happened afterwards?

After the numbing agent, the actual injection series took about 15 minutes. After the injections, Elizabeth had me stay for about 10 minutes to apply ice packs. She also gave me an ice pack for the drive home. I continued the icing “on and off” into the evening hours.

Did you have any bruising or swelling?

I did not have any bruising, but I did have a little swelling which lasted a couple days. I met with people I already knew the very next day, and they didn’t even notice it. I really believe the icing helped considerably.

Would you recommend Volbella to others?

I absolutely will and already have. While it’s a great product, you need someone like Elizabeth or Dr. Bolitho do the injections so you receive the very best results.

Facial rejuvenation for the holiday season

Facial rejuvenation for the holiday season

As 2016 comes to an end, an array of festivities will be in full swing. In the weeks ahead, holiday parties, family gatherings, and other celebrations will fill the calendar. With these social engagements some may wonder what facial rejuvenation treatments are doable during this time-frame — meaning, facial rejuvenation with little to no downtime. This is important because this is the hustle and bustle time of the year.

The good news is there is a roster of treatments which fit into this category.

Cosmetic Injections

While cosmetic injections are minimally invasive, treatments should be performed in a medical setting by a healthcare professional adept in facial anatomy such as a plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist. Depending on the treatment chosen, results can be immediate such as a filler or appear days after the injection series such as Botox.

As one ages, they tend to lose volume around certain areas of their facial canvas such as their cheekbones. Created by Allergan, JUVÉDERM® Voluma™ is a cosmetic injectable gel which can help restore this volume in a subtle and natural-looking way. An injection series in the deep subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal region provides cheek augmentation to the mid-portion of the face and Voluma patients note that their results can last up to two years.

Also by Allergan is JUVÉDERM®, another hyaluronic acid cosmetic injectable gel, which is a leading choice to lessen the appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Quite new to the aesthetic world of cosmetic injections is JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC. This injection series specifically targets lip rejuvenation by adding subtle volume and lessens the appearance of vertical lines that occurs with age due to repeated muscle movement and solar exposure. Volbella which promotes both a youthful and subtle fullness offers results for up to a year.

One of the most popular cosmetic injections is Allergan’s Botox — another excellent choice for facial rejuvenation by minimizing the signs of aging in the following areas:

  • Horizontal forehead lines and wrinkles
  • Frown lines and wrinkles
  • Squint lines such as crow’s feet

As previously mentioned, it’s highly recommended to see a medical professional for these injections series. During a consultation, they will give their own recommendation after hearing the aesthetic wishes of their patients. The goal of all these injections is to have patients look refreshed with natural-looking results.

Skin Resurfacing

Chemical peels do a fine job in resurfacing the skin in terms of minimizing lines, diminishing age spots, and evening out skin tone. A chemical peel is a good choice if one is not attending an event for about 10 days. However, if this is not the case, another option is to schedule a Break Time Peel.

A Break Time Peel is a combination of dermplaning and a light chemical peel. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair and dead skin cells via a stainless steel tool and prepares the skin for the upcoming peel. Results from a Break Time Peel include the following:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Improved skin tone
  • Produces and promotes collagen

In less than an hour, patients can return back to their day.

During this very busy time of the year, there is indeed an array of facial rejuvenation choices.

Changing the face of science

Changing the face of science

Science continues to redefine itself in the area of facial rejuvenation. With an eye to the future, a recent article published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery has paved the way to new ideas and possibilities. And in the world of science, it’s all about new concepts.

While facial surgery such as facelifts, cosmetic injections, and even fat grafting have filled a vital niche for many patients opting for rejuvenation, researchers are testing to see if the human body can somehow perhaps be encouraged to stimulate facial tissue regrowth.

This area of science is called regenerative medicine.

In Vocativ, reporter Alexandra Ossola covers this recent article which was authored by Matthew Q. Miller, MD. Miller is a surgeon specializing in the head and neck regions from the University of Virginia Health System.

Ossola writes, “Though scientists’ interest in regenerative medicine has grown steadily since the early 2000s, interest in facial surgeries in particular isn’t reflected in the literature until 2010. Miller believes there are two reasons for this. Generally, facial surgeries have good outcomes—they heal quickly and have a low rate of infection, so there’s no need for dramatic improvement.”

Miller also shared that there is not “margin for error” in operative facial surgery.

“Even small imperfections can really stand out, as people’s eyes always focus on the faces of others in day-to-day interactions. Because of this, new techniques are a little slower to gain widespread acceptance among surgeons,” Miller said.

Also interviewed in the article was Richard D’ Amico who serves as the chair of the Regenerative Medicine Task Force which is a branch of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

D’Amico notes how hyaluronic acid fillers support facial structures. Fillers such as these are noted to add a more youthful appearance when volume or elasticity has dissipated due to age or premature aging. While injections of this type such as Juvederm offer a great outcome, the results are temporary lasting up to a couple of years.

While patient dependent, fat grafting is generally utilized during a facial surgery to add volume. Following liposuction of a small area such as the thighs, abdomen, or hips, the fat is then filtered via a centrifuge before the injections occur in the rejuvenation procedure

In the article, D’Amico described this process as labor intensive thus requiring it to be more expensive for the patient.

“If regenerative medicine works the way researchers think it could, patients could just get a quick injection, plus some localized anesthesia, to repair their facial tissues,” Miller writes. “And while it might not be able to repair tissues in a “Star Trek-like fashion” (that is, with a device that can heal wounds almost instantly), Miller and his co-authors write, these regenerative techniques could usher in a new age of plastic surgery for the face.”

The three levels scientists are currently focused on include the following:

  • Stem Cells
  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Protein Matrix

While more research is underway and these above scientific avenues still require more answers, it’s interesting to know how science continues to play a role in facial rejuvenation in one form or another.

Cosmetic Injections Myths Debunked

Cosmetic Injections Myths Debunked

A new era of aesthetics can be found by way of cosmetic injections be it Botox or fillers, such as Juvederm. This medical treatment can temporarily reverse signs of aging by smoothing out fine lines and adding volume which dissipates as one matures.

Like any treatment, there are myths about cosmetic injections. And thanks to medical professionals, they can reveal the truth about them.

For many who want to embark on the cosmetic injection pathway, plastic surgeons and aesthetic nurses often hear concerns from patients that they don’t want their face to look unnatural and frozen.

Nicole Dowler, RN, who is certified in the delivery of cosmetic injections, indicates that outcomes such as this where one has difficulty moving their face has undergone too much of everything. For Dowler, her motto is “less is more.”

And this approach is best.

“People don’t want to look like they have had something done. So the best response to that is to try a little bit and then come back for another visit a couple weeks later,” she said.

According to Dowler, if one has undergone Botox and/or filler by a medical professional who knows facial anatomy then nobody is supposed to notice.

“People will know you look good, but they won’t be able to figure out what was done if it was properly delivered with the right amount,” she said.

Another item Dowler pointed out is that people can sometimes be uneasy with the fact that Botox is derived from botulism. Potential patients want to be assured that these injections are safe to do.

Botox is used in high unit amounts in cases such as migraine treatments, spasms, cerebral palsy, and more. The usage for cosmetics is a great deal less. And patients were using Botox to treat a myriad of health issues years before it hit the cosmetic scene.

“The amount of units that we’re using for cosmetic reasons is so small,” said Dowler, noting how she has never personally witnessed a negative outcome. “It’s such a small amount that we’re using to help soften those lines that people usually feel pretty good about it once I explain it that way.”

Highly regarded fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma are made of hyaluronic acid. According to Dowler, hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the human body so there is nothing foreign about it.

Like Botox, potential patients have heard myths about how fillers have the potential to look obvious or overdone. Medical professionals know that delivery should be slow and methodical.

“It’s very easy to add a little at a time,” she said.

If for any reason a patient is unhappy with the outcome, Dowler said there is a substance that can be injected into the area of where the filler was which can reverse the enhanced appearance.

“Basically, it dissolves the filler,” she said. “People are pretty happy about that.”

However, although there is a substance to reverse a filler, the approach is still to add a little at a time to achieve the most natural and youthful appearance possible.
