Plastic Surgery Consultation: Plan Ahead

Plastic Surgery Consultation: Plan Ahead

For some individuals, a new year means new possibilities. One pathway of possibilities may be aesthetics by way of plastic surgery. When one has located a board-certified plastic surgeon, the next step is scheduling a plastic surgery consultation.

It’s completely normal for a patient to feel a blend of excitement and nervousness at this appointment. Nevertheless, there are some things that a patient can do ahead of time to make the most of their consultation.

Karen Martindale is a patient concierge for San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. D. Glynn Bolitho. Dedicating more than 25 years in the cosmetic surgery industry, Ms. Martindale brings a wealth of knowledge to patients preparing for a consultation.

Ms. Martindale’s sage advice is to plan ahead.

Top plastic surgeons like Dr. Bolitho are going to be booked about four to six weeks in advance. So most of the time, a patient will not be able to walk in and request surgery the very next week,” Ms. Martindale said. “With that said, it’s never too soon to come in for a consultation.”

According to Ms. Martindale, some patients who want to learn more about liposuction or tummy tuck may think that they need to be at their ideal weight before their consultation. Ms. Martindale shared that potential patients do not need to wait.

“It’s always a great idea to come in for your consultation three or four months ahead of time so future plans can be made. Even though you may not be at your ideal weight, coming in and having your consultation is a great start,” Ms. Martindale said. “Many patients have also explained how the consultation served as a great incentive to help them achieve their weight loss goal.”

In other instances, achieving a certain weight loss for a particular procedure may not be necessary. Ms. Martindale shared an example such as for those wanting a neck lift or surgical facial rejuvenation procedure.

“If you’re within 10 to 15 pounds of your ideal weight, having a facelift may not make that much difference,” Ms. Martindale said.

Planning ahead is also needed if one is smoking traditional cigarettes or inhaling e-liquid nicotine while vaping.  Ms. Martindale wants potential patients to know that they need to stop smoking four weeks before and after surgery. And on a side note, Ms. Martindale happily reported how many of their patients never returned to their cigarette use.

Writing down questions ahead of time was also mentioned by Ms. Martindale.

“These questions can vary, but generally they range from recovery, when they can resume their exercise routines, and when they can fly,” she said.

For marathon runners readying for a future event, planning ahead on the opportune timeframe for surgery is important to address.

“Busy moms also need to coordinate their surgery time with their children’s schedules and possible childcare assistance,” Ms. Martindale said. “Another thing a patient will want to inquire is if their plastic surgeon will be out of town during the time they are interested in having surgery.”

In many respects, a plastic surgery consultation can help turn a possibility into a reality.

Where Travelers Seek Plastic Surgery

Where Travelers Seek Plastic Surgery

The news of people traveling to a destiny to receive cosmetic procedures is garnering more attention. While some people coin this as “medical tourism,” depending on the destination, it can very well be a rejuvenation vacation.

In a recent edition of Travelers Today, reporter Joseph Peter Capaque revealed the top destinations where people journey for cosmetic surgery.

These top countries include the following:

  • USA
  • Italy
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • South Korea

Before delving into the procedures patients seek in these countries, it is imperative to note that cosmetic procedures are medical procedures/surgeries so due diligence must be performed in locating the best board certified plastic surgeons for both safety and positive surgical outcome.

In the United States, patients are encouraged to seek doctors who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons of this caliber are highly trained, skilled, and are considered masters in their field of surgery.

While a doctor may be “certified,” if one is seeking a plastic surgery procedure, they must be certain that a doctor’s board certification is in plastic surgery.  In addition to test taking, it can require several years to become board certified. But this distinction gives patients peace of mind.

Yes, this research may take a bit more time, but it is worth every moment spent by visiting sites such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery and American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  Another important item to research is whether or not the plastic surgeon has hospital privileges. And if so, determining how those hospitals are rated is of additional importance. A top-notch hospital is as equally vital as finding a masterful surgeon.

So if one is seeking surgery in the USA, it’s highly advisable to perform the above protocol. And if one decides to visit other countries for plastic surgery procedures, it is highly recommended that they take great care making sure the facilities and surgeons being considered are up to par.

According to Travelers Today, those who seek a rejuvenation vacation in the states generally have the following procedures:

In Italy, the treatments people seek are cosmetic injections such as Botox and fillers as well as liposuction. The procedure of liposuction is also popular in Brazil as well as breast augmentations. Adjacent to Brazil is Colombia where liposuction is also highly sought.

South Korea has become one of the fastest emerging countries for operative facial procedures. Capaque reported that in addition to rhinoplasty and double eyelid procedures being on the surgical roster, liposuction was also a surgery which was also frequently scheduled.

As noted earlier in the article, safety is of the utmost importance so do take great care in finding the most experienced board certified plastic surgeon to carry out those aesthetic goals.

Americans increase the price tag of plastic surgery

Americans increase the price tag of plastic surgery

Over the years, plastic surgery has been fueled by several factors, but the leading demand stems from individuals who want to look as good as they feel. With that being said, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released some data indicating the amount of money that Americans spent on plastic surgery procedures in 2015 reached an unparalleled all-inclusive price tag: $13 million.

Since ASAPS released this information, a handful of articles have followed highlighting different portions of the study. The data was incredibly concise, revealing the top-tier body and facial rejuvenation procedures that both men and women seek; however, women comprised 90 percent of the procedures underwent in 2015.

In 2015, a total of female Americans had 11.5 million plastic surgery procedures. And men tallied 1.5 million procedures.

Plastic surgery has become an important part of American culture, not to mention around the globe. But here in the states, many have suspected that Corporate America has fueled the desire to seek facial rejuvenation. For many individuals who have worked so hard to achieve their career status, a number of them want to retain their position and not retire. A group in this category view plastic surgery as an asset toward their extended career investment.

In the Washington Times, Jennifer Harper wrote a follow-up piece to the ASAPS data. In her article was a statement by president of ASAPS, Dr. James C. Grotting.

“I personally believe the motivating factors for that are varied, but remaining competitive in the workforce is certainly a common factor. Youth is a commodity, and people are investing in themselves to maintain a younger, healthier appearance,” Dr. Grotting said.

While different age ranges were assessed, 40 percent of patients between the ages of 30 to 50 took part in cosmetic procedures. For women, the top procedure in 2015 was liposuction. Following close behind was breast augmentation, tummy tuck, breast lift and eyelid surgery.

The procedures men sought differed; however, their number one procedure was also liposuction. Next was nose reshaping surgery, eyelid surgery, male breast reduction and facelift.

Although not in the top five for women, buttock augmentation and buttock lifts increased quite quickly in numbers, as well. And the demand is increasing.

Harper wrote, “The surgeons note that fat transfer to the face – a new category – ‘instantly’ landed in the top-10 list, as did nonsurgical skin tightening, a procedure particularly popular among men.”

Fat transfer in the face can be considered by many as being done in lieu of fillers. As one ages, they begin to lose volume in their face, particularly around the nasolabial folds and cheek area. While fillers can last up to a year or more, some patients are welcoming a fat transfer. Fat is extracted from a person’s body and then utilized to add youthful fullness to facial features.

In the non-operative sector, Botox led the way at 4.2 million procedures last year. Fillers trailed close behind as did other minimally invasive procedures such as chemical peels.

Be it operative or non-operative procedures, plastic surgery is filling an aesthetic niche for people of all ages.

Aging Population Considers Cosmetic Surgery

By: | Tags: , ,

Polls and data are ever circulating revealing what is on the minds of Americans. One survey assessed how concerned individuals were with aging. In other words, what was their tolerance level in relation to the reflection in the mirror as the years pushed on?

For the most part, they weren’t quite lenient with themselves in this category. This self-perception branched out into areas of the workplace, romance, health, and more. While a breakdown of the survey is below, it appeared as if women were less accepting to the changes which went along with aging as opposed to their male counterparts.

Yes, while more men are seeking procedures for youthful rejuvenation, the percentages still remain higher for women.

The survey included a poll of 2,000 Americans and here were the findings:

  • 90 percent of females were considered to receive more pressure to appear more youthful.
  • Men received a 5-year gain for aging.
  • Results showed that women looked optimal at 30.
  • Results showed that men looked optimal at 34.

Allure Magazine championed this interesting poll. Their executive director, Kristin Perrotta wrote, “The survey definitely shows that aging, when we are talking about appearance, is a real emotional touch point for both men and women, no matter whether they are 20, 40, 60.”  She continued, “People overwhelmingly said they were concerned about the effects of aging. They were concerned about how it would affect their attractiveness to the opposite sex and particularly with women, how aging would affect their career.”

This type of survey truly gleans some helpful information not only for people with this mindset but for also plastic surgeons who are consulting with patients. They are able to intellectually and emotionally grasp what the aesthetic needs of their patients truly are.

Above all, people are taking great care of themselves through fitness, a healthy diet, and stress decompression tactics such as yoga and meditation. They are feeling younger than ever and they want that feeling to be expressed in how they look.

For many, cosmetic surgery is an extension of those personal goals and investment they want to make in themselves.

Some other survey results revealed the following:

  • One in 20 respondents did undergo cosmetic injections or plastic surgery.
  • Forty-two percent of women surveyed that they would agree to cosmetic injections or surgery to restore their youth.
  • Eighteen percent of men claimed they would consider cosmetic injections or plastic surgery.
  • Respondents thought they looked younger than their peers.

As mentioned earlier, while more women are seeking non-operative and operative facial rejuvenation procedures than men, the percentage of the male population is climbing.

For females, the operative roster includes eyelid surgery, liposuction, lower limited facelifts, and breast augmentation. Males leaned toward liposuction in the flank area (love handles) and also eyelid surgery.

As surveys continue to be published, the most important item to convey is that plastic surgery is a personal decision and no one should ever feel pressured. Being mindful and consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon is the first step in the aesthetic learning curve.

Plastic Surgery Popularity Worldwide

Life achievement - happy woman arms up in success. Back view of

While the USA leads in plastic surgery around the globe, when compared to other countries and matched up against their own population numbers, it rates at number four. It’s an interesting twist.

Before sharing who the top five countries are, it’s fascinating to note how plastic surgery is becoming so well accepted in the world. What was once a surgery for only the “rich and famous” has indeed transcended to others not in this category.

People who consider plastic surgery come from all backgrounds. For example, those who are working later in life are considering it so they can look more youthful in the corporate world.

While these top five countries are the most popular in plastic surgery, if one is considering surgery outside of their country, it’s important to do all the necessary research as one would embark on here in the states. Double checking that a surgeon is board certified, qualified, and has hospital privileges truly transcend to other countries.

Some patients are tying in a surgery with a vacation beforehand. However, always remember that safety is a priority and should always trump any other decisions.

Starting from the fifth ranking country and working upward, here are the countries which made the cut:

  1. Colombia

It’s estimated that more than 90,000 plastic surgery procedures were performed in Colombia. The leading surgery performed is liposuction.

  1. USA

In 2014, the USA performed 10,663,607 cosmetic surgeries. Like Colombia, liposuction was the most popular. Other treatments in the country included nose surgery, eyelid surgery, and the cosmetic injection, Botox. From 2013-2014, it was estimated that Americans spent nearly $12 billion in this area of medicine.

  1. Italy

Botox has been incredibly widespread in Italy for non-operative procedures. For surgical procedures, liposuction once again was the most popular with an estimated 69,000 surgeries performed in 2010.

  1. Greece

For many, learning that Greece is rated second is quite a surprise. The most popular procedure in this country is breast augmentations.

  1. South Korea

Where beauty is held in high regard in South Korea, it’s estimated that 1 out of 5 individuals have undergone cosmetic surgery. While all procedures are in demand, the one that leads the way is upper and lower eyelid surgeries.

So many countries around the world have adopted cosmetic surgery into their culture. The trends have clearly branched from the Western culture into a variety of others. Plastic surgery is no longer the exception but becoming more common in everyday life.

Plastic Surgery Trends Emulate From East To West Coasts

By: | Tags: , , , , ,

Fashion Girl Relaxed With Her Legs Raised Up

A recent article emerged from central New York citing the types of plastic surgery trends which are most apparent today in the world of cosmetic surgery.

Despite the miles between the east and west coasts, plastic surgery trends really are on point for both sides of the nation.

One inference was made which many San Diego plastic surgeons can agree with is that plastic surgery is not just for celebrities. It is available to all people of varying income levels. And what makes it more affordable is cosmetic surgery financing. This viewpoint really reinforces that cosmetic surgery is an investment in oneself.

For starters, majority of patients range from their forties to sixties; however, some patients may have their first visit in their thirties. These women come from all walks of professions including executives, teachers, health care professionals, real estate agents, and more.

Many are coming in to give themselves a youthful boost of self-confidence in the workplace and in a social atmosphere. There is a growing number of men who are following this pathway as well.

People are holding onto their careers longer and want to look their very best by living a healthy lifestyle and pursuing different avenues in plastic surgery.

The advent of liquid facelifts, also referred to as cosmetic injections, is delaying operative facial rejuvenation treatments. The most popular of these on the facial rejuvenation roster are the following:

  • Botox
  • Juvederm
  • Restylane

Both women and men are seeking these injections because they help smooth away fine lines and wrinkles without any downtime. It erases years when someone is in their forties and early fifties while also minimizing premature aging.

The side-effects are minimal bruising which can be camouflaged with makeup. Some even get these treatments during their lunch hour.

Rather than having a full facelift, many patients are welcoming minimally invasive lower facelift procedures where small, discreet incisions are made thereby redefining the jawline and lifting the neck area. Recovery time is very quick and the results are immediate.

Also on the surgical front trend list are mommy makeovers. Why is this so? Women who have completed having their families want the body they had before their days of pregnancy. A mommy makeover does a tremendous job in rejuvenating the breasts and abdomen.

Procedures included in a mommy makeover are a breast lift with or without implants and a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck can also correct the separation of stomach muscles so a woman can regain her abdominal strength.

While a mommy makeover is a comprehensive surgery, the recovery time is really dictated by the tummy tuck. Tummy tucks can either address the abdomen below the navel or below and above the navel. Also included in the procedure can be liposuction.

Generally, the recovery takes a few weeks and women are thrilled with the transformation.

So despite the miles between New York and California, it appears that plastic surgery trends are mirroring one another. The best part of all is both men and women are gratified with the results.

The Dr. Bolitho Team Garners Positive Feedback

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Dr. Bolitho
Dr. Bolitho frequently hears kind patient feedback when it comes to his front and back office staff.

When he chose his team, Dr. Bolitho shared, a great deal of it had to do with instinct coupled with their training.

“I always like to think that someone can be trained up to a level of clinical proficiency provided that they have the empathic nature to do a job,” Bolitho said. He added, “I would rather have that type of team member, than someone let’s say, who is highly trained but lacks that type of character who cannot relate well to patients.”

For Dr. Bolitho, it has always been more important to him to bring a team member onboard who conveyed special human characteristics when interacting with patients.

While Dr. Bolitho is well known for an array of different cosmetic surgical procedures, he also performs many breast reconstruction surgeries for women who have lost a breast either from a mastectomy or other condition. So having a compassionate medical team at his practice was imperative.

For Dr. Bolitho’s office, every day is a new day to treat their patients with the genuine medical care they deserve.
