The Trend of Modern Aesthetics

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

The Trend of Modern Aesthetics

In a world of minimally invasive nonsurgical facial rejuvenation procedures, striking a balance between trend and what’s aesthetically attractive remains the goal. The advent of cosmetic injections such as Botox and fillers has afforded patients with numerous aesthetic possibilities. While this is true, finding the right medical professional such as a board-certified plastic surgeon or their handpicked aesthetic nurse specialist to deliver these injection series is of the utmost importance since their in-depth understanding of the facial anatomy is superb.

Unwavering commitments among these medical professionals, particularly plastic surgeons who are considered excellent by their own peers, have to balance ethics when facial trends emerge. Their Hippocratic Oath bounds them to uphold professional and moral principles which encompass the best care for their patients.

In a patient consultation, doctors will listen to the aesthetic wishes of their patients. If a patient requests a procedure which a doctor believes would not be advantageous to their appearance, a candid discussion will take place on why this is so.

An example of this would be lip augmentation via fillers. Lip enhancement is considered one of the top leading trends. Candidates for lip augmentation may inquire about a treatment for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Naturally thin lips
  • Lips which have lost volume with age
  • Correct the appearance of uneven lips
  • Quick recovery following an injection series

In a consultation, a doctor will determine if enhancing a patient’s lips will help balance one’s facial contours. If a doctor feels as if a patient is a good candidate for the procedure and moves forward with the treatment, a collision between ethics and aesthetics may collide if a patient requests more filler which would outsize their lips following the procedure.

It’s important to note that this just doesn’t pertain to lip enhancement. This applies to “over injecting” other parts of the face, such as augmenting the cheeks or minimizing wrinkles via Botox. It all falls into the same aesthetic category.

The results of cosmetic injections should be subtle and undetectable by others.

While trends do shape culture, it’s ultimately the responsibility of a board-certified plastic surgeon to provide their patients with timeless beauty in a natural looking way.

Even though a patient may have their own particular view on how their nonsurgical facial rejuvenation should look, it’s important to discuss it in detail if a medical professional may not fully agree. If the reasons aren’t totally understood, do ask for more explanation and clarification.

Above all, doctors in this aesthetic field have a distinct vision and don’t want to compromise it based on trend.

A New Year of Youthful Possibilities

A New Year of Youthful Possibilities

A new year is upon us and filled with possibilities. As many welcome 2017, some have undoubtedly either physically or mentally jotted down their goals for the new year. While a popular resolution is becoming healthier by way of diet and exercise, many are realizing how this is transcending to skin care health goals as well.

Here is a springboard of ideas for more luminous and younger looking skin in 2017.

It’s A Partnership

The first step in achieving skin care goals is teaming up with the right medical professional.  A partnership with a board-certified plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist is an essential component for a variety of reasons. Not only will they be on the cutting-edge of new technologies, but they are incredibly adept and trained in the facial anatomy.

Ongoing education for these medical professionals is also at the forefront.

Patients can have peace of mind knowing that these experts will deliver cosmetic injections such as Botox, Kybella, or Juvederm, as intended with natural-looking results.

Patients will also be afforded with pharmaceutical grade skincare products which deliver results as well as top solar protection via sunscreen.

Laser Treatments

Teaming up with a plastic surgery office also means having access to top treatment such as Smart Xide Dot Laser. This type of laser procedure is considered by many to be in the lead since it offers optimal facial rejuvenation with a short recovery timeframe, typically lasting five days.

Top plastic surgeons seek lasers which have similar results to CO2 lasers but with less downtime. Lasers such as Smart Xide Dot Laser, which lasts about an hour, can promote a youthful canvas by the following:

  • Significantly reducing wrinkles
  • Removing pigmentation challenges
  • Stimulating new collagen
  • Eliminating sun damage

In the world of aesthetics, laser treatments can now be customized for a patient’s wishes and needs for their rejuvenation goals.

Endless Possibilities

The skin care treatments that patients are afforded at a plastic surgeon’s office are vast. While there is a variety to choose from, a consultation with either a plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist is the first exciting step.

As briefly mentioned, these medical professionals realize that everyone has their own unique facial rejuvenation goals. With that in mind, each patient pathway must be tailored to ensure that these goals are met.

While cosmetic injections have proven to be excellent in terms of rejuvenation, the concept of skin rejuvenation must also be addressed to achieve youthful luminosity.  The types of nonsurgical treatments available to patients include the following:

When under the care of a plastic surgeon or aesthetic nurse specialist, patients feel assured that their skin care goals will be monitored on a regular basis as well as making certain that the right skin care products are being used at home.

After all, achieving gorgeous skin takes teamwork.

Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

Patient Describes Volbella as Top Pick

This year Christina G. made a commitment to take care of her skin with the help of our aesthetic nurse specialist, Elizabeth. While implementing a day and evening regimen with SkinMedica, she has also undergone various treatments such as Botox, Voluma, chemical peels, and dermaplaning.

One of her most recent visits with Elizabeth was to try the newest cosmetic injection created by Allergan called Juvederm Volbella. The aesthetic goal of Volbella is to create subtle lip fullness while decreasing the appearance of vertical lines which are caused by age and sun overexposure.

A few weeks ago, Christina, 50, decided to give Juvederm Volbella a try.

What made you decide to schedule a Volbella treatment?

I have been under the care of Elizabeth for about a year now. She mentioned this new cosmetic injection called Volbella and how I might be a great candidate. Elizabeth shared how their patient coordinator, Karen, had it done and recommended I see her to learn of her experience. Karen raved about it and was really happy with the results. I did my own research when I got home on RealSelf, liked what I discovered, and decided to schedule an appointment.

What aesthetic changes did you want from your Volbella treatment?

I definitely wanted fuller lips but nothing that looked too overdone. I was searching for something more natural looking. I also had these vertical lines on my lower and top lips and hoped that could be resolved, too.

Did you find the Volbella treatment results satisfactory?

I absolutely did. The fullness was the perfect amount, and I also noticed a very subtle pout. The added fullness also made most of my vertical lines disappear. This treatment really rejuvenated my lip area, particularly the top portion, Cupid ’s bow. I am very happy with the results.

Were the injections painful?

I really experienced minimal discomfort. Elizabeth first applied a topical numbing agent to my lips and let it sit for about 25 minutes or so. Following this, she began the injection series which outlined the bottom and lower portion of my lips. The only area I felt a couple of the injections were the middle-top portion of my lips. Aside from this area, I barely felt a thing. Elizabeth also explained how Volbella had lidocaine in its ingredients which helped ease any discomfort.

How long did it take and what happened afterwards?

After the numbing agent, the actual injection series took about 15 minutes. After the injections, Elizabeth had me stay for about 10 minutes to apply ice packs. She also gave me an ice pack for the drive home. I continued the icing “on and off” into the evening hours.

Did you have any bruising or swelling?

I did not have any bruising, but I did have a little swelling which lasted a couple days. I met with people I already knew the very next day, and they didn’t even notice it. I really believe the icing helped considerably.

Would you recommend Volbella to others?

I absolutely will and already have. While it’s a great product, you need someone like Elizabeth or Dr. Bolitho do the injections so you receive the very best results.

Patient gives chemical peel kudos

Patient gives chemical peel kudos

A month ago our patient visited the office and had a Voluma treatment with our aesthetic nurse specialist, Elizabeth Reed. Two weeks following her injection series, she made plans to return for her Juvederm treatment.

But that didn’t happen.

“I was expecting to get Juvederm, but Elizabeth was so honest with me by saying how I didn’t need it since the Voluma injections I received a couple weeks before to add volume to my cheek area had actually resolved my nasolabial folds,” Christina said. “As I was sitting there, Elizabeth asked when I’d be available to do a chemical peel because she thought I’d benefit from it.”

For Christina G., 50, a TCA peel (trichloroacetic acid) was going to be different than the type she had with Elizabeth months ago during a Break Time Peel. That one was a very light peel and Christina could immediately resume back to her day’s activities, and she didn’t experience any peeling. She didn’t know what to expect from a TCA peel.

“To be honest, I was a bit concerned about how I would look following a chemical peel. I had no idea how much and for how long I’d be peeling,” she said. “That little voice in my head wanted to put it off, but I hadn’t had any special events planned in the next few days so I had no reason to delay it. Besides, this was Elizabeth. She is specially trained as an aesthetic nurse, and I completely trusted her with my skin and cosmetic injections.”

Reed used a medium grade TCA peel. After she prepared Christina’s skin, she applied one layer at a time. Overhead, Reed had a handheld fan to keep Christina comfortable while assessing her skin.

“In typical Elizabeth fashion, her communication skills yet again exceeded my expectations. It was important to her that she knew what ‘tingle level’ I was at,” she said.

Once Reed determined it was time to neutralize the peel, she did so. Reed also instructed Christina to only use her SkinMedica Cleanser and SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream for the next five days. Following that time, she could then go back to her normal skin care routine which included her prescription Retin-A topical at night.

According to Christina, the chemical peel aftermath was completely doable and not at all what she thought it would be like.

“For the first two days, I didn’t have any peeling. On days three, four and five, I had flakiness around my whole face, particularly around my mouth. When the peeling was visible, I just applied my post-treatment cream and that lessened the appearance considerably,” she said.

Two weeks after her first chemical peel, Christina now raves about the results. Her skin is smoother, more even toned, and her brown spots have diminished considerably. And she agrees with Reed that completing a series would be optimal.

“It’s as if the chemical peel boosted my skin to a whole new level. It’s amazing,” Christina said.

Facial rejuvenation after weight loss

Facial rejuvenation after weight loss

As many can attest to, making the decision to lose weight takes patience and dedication. Reaching those weight loss goals is truly a celebratory milestone.

For those who have attained their goal by losing 20 to 25 pounds, while they have redefined their silhouette, they may also notice that their face has lost volume.

“Anytime you lose a significant amount of weight, there is a concern about volume loss and perhaps the change of laxity in your skin,” said Elizabeth Reed, an aesthetic nurse specialist who works with San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. D. Glynn Bolitho. “So what we want to do first is to restore that volume.”

Reed mentioned the optimal products she uses are Juvederm and Voluma.

While Juvederm is used to lessen the appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines, Voluma addresses the mid-portion of the face. According to Reed, beginning rejuvenation at the mid-face is a great starting point.

This usually begins with using one syringe of Voluma. Generally, Reed likes to deliver the Voluma first and wait a couple of weeks for the product to settle before addressing nasolabial folds. In some cases, this area may resolve itself due to the Voluma, or a patient may need a lesser amount of Juvederm.

When teaming up with patients for their skin care needs, Reed will also assess whether or not they would like to reverse any premature skin aging caused by sun damage or even brighten their skin tone with a series of chemical peels.

And for those who want to lessen the appearance of wrinkles along their forehead, around their eyes and in between their brows, Botox is the “go-to” cosmetic injection.

“The goal is to tailor a skin care regimen for every person’s specific needs,” Reed said.

Reed wants everyone to know that it’s best to be within five pounds of a weight loss goal before seeking a Juvederm or Voluma treatment. The reason behind this is that when someone is close to their goal weight, a professional such as an aesthetic nurse or plastic surgeon, can glean better insight into a person’s facial structure.

“For me, it’s about a patient investing in something at the right time so they achieve the overall result that they are looking for,” she said. “When you are within five pounds of your goal weight, I think that’s a great time to make an aesthetic care plan.”

Methods to help reverse the signs of facial aging

Methods to help reverse the signs of facial aging

As one becomes mature with age, they may notice over time that their skin appears less hydrated and fine lines are more apparent. While these signs may be normal, both women and men may very well want to take steps to facial rejuvenation.

There are various reasons as to why skin ages. For many, although they have been incredibly diligent with their sunscreen, over sun exposure may still have occurred triggering premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

While UV damage plays a role in aging skin, other factors contribute to it as well including a sluggish cellular turn over, loss of natural hydration, and repeated facial movements that cause dynamic wrinkles. For those unfamiliar with the term, “dynamic wrinkles,” this occurs from recurrent facial actions such as smiling which can develop wrinkles over time along the outer corners of the eyes and mouth.

While surgical facial rejuvenation such as a facelift or lower limited facelift can produce excellent results, some patients may decide to travel a nonsurgical pathway first. And on this road are the following aesthetic avenues.

Skin Care Regimen

One of the best investments an individual can make is to team up with a medical skin care professional. An example of this is an aesthetic nurse specialist who works alongside a board certified plastic surgeon. Partnering with such an expert will offer a springboard of skin care options such as being afforded medical grade skin care products which match a person’s needs.

While many plastic surgery offices offer specific skin care lines, one prescription product not to be overlooked is Retin-A. This topical appeared on the market nearly three decades ago and was intended for the use of patients with acne. Not long after it was on the market, users noticed another improvement in their skin: Rejuvenation.

Patients agreed that their skin appeared smoother, age spots had diminished, and fine lines and wrinkles were less noticeable.

A complete antiaging skin care regimen requires Retin-A.

In office visits with a medical specialist may also include chemical peels, dermaplaning, and micro-needling to enhance those skin care results.

Botox

As mentioned earlier, dynamic muscles occur due to the frequent use of facial muscles. One way to minimize their appearance is via Botox injections. A board certified plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist can deliver this leading cosmetic injection. Finding a skilled injector who is adept in the facial anatomy is critical for one interested in receiving Botox. The results of Botox should be a refreshed and natural look.

It’s important to note that some individuals in their late twenties and/or early thirties utilize Botox to prevent these dynamic wrinkles from forming.

Fillers

The loss of hydration in one’s skin will have side effects. Some of these may include the following:

  • Less youthful fullness
  • Dull facial canvas
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin sensitivity

While some topical and in-office treatments can help with hydration, a group of patients turn to hyaluronic fillers to help treat nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Conversely, fillers such as Juvederm can help augment the lips, while Voluma can augment the cheek area.

From skin care products and treatments to cosmetic injections, each one should be tailored to a patient’s aesthetic needs and desires.

Nonsurgical facial contouring choices

By: | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Nonsurgical facial contouring choices
As one reaches their forties and fifties, they may undoubtedly notice their facial contours have altered over time. For example, the fullness in the midportion of their face, particularly in their cheeks, may have lost their youthful volume. As someone looks closely at the lower portion of their face, they may also witness submental fullness, which is more often referred to as a double chin. At different angles, the submental fullness may appear more prominent.

Although these changes don’t occur overnight, many can attest to the fact that it almost appears as if it has. The truth of the matter is that these facial transformations creep up year after year. In addition to maturity, other reasons for these changes may be heredity, weight gain, or weight loss.

Cosmetic injections have made incredible strides in the world of aesthetics. Botox, for example, is one of the leading injections used to diminish lines and wrinkles along the forehead, between the brows, and crow’s feet. While Botox is in the lead, other cosmetic injections have been pioneers in their own aesthetic right. And these injections are top choices for nonsurgical facial contouring.

To address the loss of fullness in the cheek area, a product by the name of Voluma has been considered one which has offered patients with an outstanding outcome. While patient dependent, the effects of Voluma may last up to two years.

During a consultation with a plastic surgeon or their aesthetic nurse specialist, they will determine if a person is a good candidate for Voluma. If it is determined so, photos may be taken prior to the injection so before-and-after pictures will be available.

Prior to the injection, a topical lidocaine cream will be applied to help ensure more comfort for the patient. Methodically, the medical professional will deliver the Voluma slowly. Towards the end of the injection series, a mirror will be on hand so the patient can see the aesthetic transformation. And the results are immediate. There is no downtime with Voluma; however, there may be a bit of bruising which can be easily camouflaged by makeup.

A quickly rising star for addressing submental fullness is another cosmetic injection called Kybella. While the former injection only requires one visit, Kybella is considered more of a treatment plan which may range from two to five series. Kybella’s main ingredient of deoxycholic acid breaks down and destroys fat deposits to help eradicate the appearance of a double chin. Once a person is determined to be a candidate for Kybella, the medical professional will map out the injection area on the underside portion of the chin and numb the region prior to delivering the treatment.

Treatment sessions are generally recommended to be spaced about six weeks apart. Icing is important after treatment to help alleviate any bruising or swelling following the injections.

While these treatments are considered nonsurgical, it’s incredibly important to have them executed by a medical professional who is adept in the facial anatomy.

A great skin care routine makes a difference

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

A great skin care routine makes a difference

While individuals are incorporating a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise, their desire to keep their skin looking youthful is also important to them. Many are beginning to realize that incorporating a great skin care routine compliments those health and wellness efforts.

As one ages, skin changes naturally occur such as the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Lack of skin hydration
  • Loss of volume
  • Loss of elasticity

While the aging process impacts the above facial characteristics, it is also important to point out how the environment takes a toll on one’s skin.  For example, free radicals, pollution, and unprotected sun exposure can also accelerate premature skin aging.

Despite these daily challenges, one should not curtail their skin care energies but instead implement a regular regime for both morning and night.

Partner with a skin care professional

With a mountain of skin care products to choose from, the task of choosing the right skin care routine can be downright daunting. Teaming up with a skin care professional, particularly an aesthetic nurse specialist, is an exceptional choice.

A person of this magnitude and skill can perform a skin care evaluation and help map out the right morning and evening routines. They can also afford patients medical grade skin care products which truly offer users driven results.

Skin care plans are tailored specifically for one’s skin type and examples may include the following:

  • Cleanse – To prepare skin for topical treatments
  • Treat – To target specific challenges such as fine lines and wrinkles or hydration
  • Repair – To reverse skin damage such as the use of a retinol product
  • Moisturize – To add hydration to the facial canvas including the eye area
  • Protect – To implement a solar defense to help ward off future skin damage

Skin care treatments to reverse skin damage

The advantage of partnering with an aesthetic nurse also means that they are adept in particular skin care treatments that can help diminish the signs of aging. Even in cases where one has undergone surgical facial rejuvenation, such as a lower limited facelift, skin care texture still needs to be addressed.

Most skin care treatments can be performed on a monthly basis, but again, it’s all patient dependent. And some treatments can be done with less frequency. These procedures require minimal to no downtime and produce radiant results:

  • Dermaplaning: To remove the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz)
  • Chemical Peels: To help rejuvenate the skin by diminishing the signs of fine lines, even out skin tone, and lessen the appearance of age spots
  • Micro-Needling: To help stimulate collagen and to deliver medical grade products into the skin for more luminosity.

In addition to these treatments, patients may also decide that they want to pursue cosmetic injections which may consist of Botox, Kybella, Juvederm, or Voluma to maintain their youthful skin care goals.

Solar protection bears repeating

While one is implementing a healthy lifestyle and skin care routine, a SPF sunscreen defense is of the utmost importance. When an individual turns a broad spectrum sunscreen application into a daily habit, they will invariably reap the rewards because of it.
