Online Consultations Garner Attention

Online Consultations Garner Attention

A new online cosmetic consultation portal helps individuals connect with multiple plastic surgeons.

Plastic surgery is an evolving field of medicine affording patients with refined techniques, superior technology, and strides in science at every turn. While patients are benefiting from these numerous changes, pathways in learning more about procedures and board certified plastic surgeons are progressing, too.

A variety of internet platforms such as patient review sites have helped numerous individuals. However, there is a new site named Zwivel that has emerged addressing the needs of potential patients living in a fast-paced world. Described as an online cosmetic consultation portal, individuals can connect with multiple plastic surgeons learning about the procedures they are interested in, recovery information, surgery prices, and more.

Janet Morrissey of the New York Times wrote a comprehensive piece on Zwivel. While plastic surgery entails even nonsurgical treatments such as cosmetic injections, it’s an industry that is indeed becoming part of the American culture. And it’s available to everyone.

Many who have used Zwivel are calling it the pre-step to a plastic surgery consultation. It’s a complimentary site for potential patients which can mean a cost and time savings of booking multiple consultations with plastic surgeons in the early stages of their research.

Founded by Dr. Gary Breslow and Dr. Craig Abramowitz, Zwivel was created to help make the introductory process with plastic surgeons and prospective patients more effective.

“Just as Match.com allows strangers to scroll through and evaluate potential dates, Zwivel allows patients and doctors to size up each other and ask questions before committing to surgery,” Morrissey reports. “The site allows patients to check out doctors’ credentials, send photos or videos of themselves to preferred doctors, and get those doctors to answer questions about cosmetic procedures and prices, all free.”

With a Zwivel connection, the same questions can be sent to multiple doctors allowing a person to decide which doctor is a better match.

According to Zwivel, numbers have swelled since 2015. Last year, 800 doctors were signed up and that has skyrocketed to 1,400. Patient numbers have jumped from 6,100 to over 28,000.

When interviewing co-founder Dr. Breslow, he conveyed to the New York Times that roughly 36 percent of individuals who book a consultation actually move forward in scheduling the surgery. Dr. Breslow believed that this ratio was a direct link to people having incorrect or insufficient facts prior to their appointment.

“Patients who are severely overweight sometimes think liposuction is the answer, and I tell them, ‘You don’t need liposuction; you need to lose weight,’” Dr. Breslow told the New York Times in his article. “Or a patient may want $20,000 worth of surgery and thinks the whole thing is going to cost $200.”

For some, Zwivel is creating a window of opportunity to transform connections between individuals and doctors into formal consultations. It also affords people with the opportunity to be reminded of realistic expectations and to help do away with any misconceptions.

While Morrissey pointed out that not everyone is still convinced that a virtual consultation is their current way of doing things, it’s available. And at the end of the day, having options and being mindful is always a great thing when plastic surgery is up for consideration.

Where Travelers Seek Plastic Surgery

Where Travelers Seek Plastic Surgery

The news of people traveling to a destiny to receive cosmetic procedures is garnering more attention. While some people coin this as “medical tourism,” depending on the destination, it can very well be a rejuvenation vacation.

In a recent edition of Travelers Today, reporter Joseph Peter Capaque revealed the top destinations where people journey for cosmetic surgery.

These top countries include the following:

  • USA
  • Italy
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • South Korea

Before delving into the procedures patients seek in these countries, it is imperative to note that cosmetic procedures are medical procedures/surgeries so due diligence must be performed in locating the best board certified plastic surgeons for both safety and positive surgical outcome.

In the United States, patients are encouraged to seek doctors who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons of this caliber are highly trained, skilled, and are considered masters in their field of surgery.

While a doctor may be “certified,” if one is seeking a plastic surgery procedure, they must be certain that a doctor’s board certification is in plastic surgery.  In addition to test taking, it can require several years to become board certified. But this distinction gives patients peace of mind.

Yes, this research may take a bit more time, but it is worth every moment spent by visiting sites such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery and American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  Another important item to research is whether or not the plastic surgeon has hospital privileges. And if so, determining how those hospitals are rated is of additional importance. A top-notch hospital is as equally vital as finding a masterful surgeon.

So if one is seeking surgery in the USA, it’s highly advisable to perform the above protocol. And if one decides to visit other countries for plastic surgery procedures, it is highly recommended that they take great care making sure the facilities and surgeons being considered are up to par.

According to Travelers Today, those who seek a rejuvenation vacation in the states generally have the following procedures:

In Italy, the treatments people seek are cosmetic injections such as Botox and fillers as well as liposuction. The procedure of liposuction is also popular in Brazil as well as breast augmentations. Adjacent to Brazil is Colombia where liposuction is also highly sought.

South Korea has become one of the fastest emerging countries for operative facial procedures. Capaque reported that in addition to rhinoplasty and double eyelid procedures being on the surgical roster, liposuction was also a surgery which was also frequently scheduled.

As noted earlier in the article, safety is of the utmost importance so do take great care in finding the most experienced board certified plastic surgeon to carry out those aesthetic goals.

Americans increase the price tag of plastic surgery

Americans increase the price tag of plastic surgery

Over the years, plastic surgery has been fueled by several factors, but the leading demand stems from individuals who want to look as good as they feel. With that being said, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released some data indicating the amount of money that Americans spent on plastic surgery procedures in 2015 reached an unparalleled all-inclusive price tag: $13 million.

Since ASAPS released this information, a handful of articles have followed highlighting different portions of the study. The data was incredibly concise, revealing the top-tier body and facial rejuvenation procedures that both men and women seek; however, women comprised 90 percent of the procedures underwent in 2015.

In 2015, a total of female Americans had 11.5 million plastic surgery procedures. And men tallied 1.5 million procedures.

Plastic surgery has become an important part of American culture, not to mention around the globe. But here in the states, many have suspected that Corporate America has fueled the desire to seek facial rejuvenation. For many individuals who have worked so hard to achieve their career status, a number of them want to retain their position and not retire. A group in this category view plastic surgery as an asset toward their extended career investment.

In the Washington Times, Jennifer Harper wrote a follow-up piece to the ASAPS data. In her article was a statement by president of ASAPS, Dr. James C. Grotting.

“I personally believe the motivating factors for that are varied, but remaining competitive in the workforce is certainly a common factor. Youth is a commodity, and people are investing in themselves to maintain a younger, healthier appearance,” Dr. Grotting said.

While different age ranges were assessed, 40 percent of patients between the ages of 30 to 50 took part in cosmetic procedures. For women, the top procedure in 2015 was liposuction. Following close behind was breast augmentation, tummy tuck, breast lift and eyelid surgery.

The procedures men sought differed; however, their number one procedure was also liposuction. Next was nose reshaping surgery, eyelid surgery, male breast reduction and facelift.

Although not in the top five for women, buttock augmentation and buttock lifts increased quite quickly in numbers, as well. And the demand is increasing.

Harper wrote, “The surgeons note that fat transfer to the face – a new category – ‘instantly’ landed in the top-10 list, as did nonsurgical skin tightening, a procedure particularly popular among men.”

Fat transfer in the face can be considered by many as being done in lieu of fillers. As one ages, they begin to lose volume in their face, particularly around the nasolabial folds and cheek area. While fillers can last up to a year or more, some patients are welcoming a fat transfer. Fat is extracted from a person’s body and then utilized to add youthful fullness to facial features.

In the non-operative sector, Botox led the way at 4.2 million procedures last year. Fillers trailed close behind as did other minimally invasive procedures such as chemical peels.

Be it operative or non-operative procedures, plastic surgery is filling an aesthetic niche for people of all ages.

Cosmetic surgery and treatments in 2016

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Cosmetic surgery and treatments in 2016
With a new year, many individuals may consider this as an opportunity to improve their aesthetics through diet, exercise and cosmetic procedures. Recently, the New York Daily News covered an industrywide survey from an online website named RealSelf. This website is considered a portal which offers patients the opportunity to learn more about plastic surgery and nonsurgical options. With the assistance of plastic surgeons, potential candidates can have their questions answered as well as those who are patients in the midst of a procedure recovery.

A regarded site, RealSelf generated a survey to those working in the field in hopes it could glean a better understanding on where the plastic surgery trends were directed in 2016. According to the responses, five items stood out among the rest which included the following:

• Buttock augmentation
• Decrease bustline
Lip enhancement
Neck rejuvenation
Chin enhancement

Looking into 2016, these procedures appeared to be paving the way to a new year.

Body Contouring Procedures

When diet and exercise are unable to correct areas of the body where lax skin or stubborn fat deposits remain, many turn to body contouring procedures as an option. There are many procedures which fall into this category which may include the following:

• Breast lift
• Upper arm surgery
• Body lift
• Liposuction
• Tummy tuck
• Buttock augmentation

And more….

Buttock Augmentation

Board certified plastic surgeons are noticing that the desire for a more voluptuous chest size is now being shifted toward buttock augmentation. Implants are utilized for this surgery to enhance the size and curvature of the posterior region. According to the RealSelf survey, women prefer a smaller bustline and want to increase the shapely curves in their hind end.

Lip Augmentation

On the nonsurgical front, lip augmentation with the use of fillers is gaining attention, and according to the survey will attract new patients.

As reported by Jacqueline Cutler of the New York Daily News, “Thirty percent of dermatologists and 43% of plastic surgeons report they received more requests about lips in 2015 than 2014, another trend expected to continue.”

Neck and Chin Surgeries For Selfies

During 2015, there were an array of articles discussing how selfies were indeed an impetus for so many individuals wanting to undergo a facial and neck rejuvenation. Selfies have redefined how people see themselves, and most importantly, how they want to improve themselves.

While some patients may be tolerant with their facial aging for a period of time, the improvements they currently seek are surgically geared toward a more youthful neck and redefinition of the chin.

“And 68% of the doctors say they expect to have patients requesting neck and chin work in 2016,” Cutler wrote.

Plastic Surgery Consultations

While surveys can give insight as to where plastic surgery trends are headed, it’s highly urged and recommended that potential patients have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss the procedure(s) they are interested in. While learning more about the procedure, they can understand the recovery process.

Plastic surgery is a personal decision and one that should be made with thoughtful consideration.

Antidepressants: Study Examines Meds Before Cosmetic Surgery

Antidepressants: Study Examines Meds Before Cosmetic Surgery

A recent study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a medical journal by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, outlined a study indicating that there was no strong evidence suggesting that continuing antidepressants before cosmetic surgery would increase a patient’s risk intraoperatively or postoperatively. The study was conducted by Dr. Isabel Teo of Ninewells Hospital in Dundee along with Christopher Tam Song, a medical student at University of Edinburgh.

According to Science Daily which used Wolters Kluwer Health as its source, “Antidepressant use has increased in recent years, with one study reporting that 1 out of 10 U.S. adults and adolescents use these medications. Rates of antidepressant use may be even higher among patients undergoing cosmetic plastic surgery, or patients with breast cancer undergoing breast reconstruction.” It continued, “While plastic surgeons are alert for use of medications that might increase complications, such as blood thinners, they are typically not concerned about antidepressants.”

Antidepressants help adjust certain brain chemicals which alleviate a person’s mood disorder or specific behavior(s). This prescription drug can help with an array of conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and more.

Additionally, antidepressants have been known to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, fibromyalgia, premenstrual symptoms, and neuropathy.

Antidepressants have benefited many individuals in a variety of ways, so a study such as this one is incredibly useful to both doctors and their patients.

The research article went on to say that Dr. Teo and Song crafted a comprehensive study which included various statistics and data regarding the relationship between cosmetic surgery risks and antidepressants. A total of 26 studies were part of the research. Different levels of study included:

  • Bleeding
  • Risk of breast cancer
  • Breast cancer outcome
  • Enlargement of the breasts

The study focused particularly on antidepressants categorized as SSRI, also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

In reference to bleeding, Dr. Teo and Song assessed two groups of patients: over 34,000 breast reconstruction patients following breast cancer surgery and more than 2,500 cosmetic surgery patients. The results for bleeding were deemed inconsistent.

The report also indicated, “So while the evidence doesn’t rule out an increase in bleeding risk, stopping antidepressants before surgery–especially the widely used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)–might worsen depression symptoms…” They added, “Therefore, routine discontinuation of antidepressants before surgery in the absence of a careful evaluation should be avoided.”

In the breast cancer risk category, the results were again determined as conflicting for antidepressant users. While there was some moderate increase, others indicated no correlation.

For breast cancer outcomes, the study gleaned information about those taking tamoxifen to help reduce the recurrence of breast cancer. Researchers found no indication that antidepressants triggered a “drug combination” reaction.

Enlargement of the breasts was another area of the study. Any correlation of increased size was attributed to weight gain, a side effect of SSRI.

The report findings also cited, “While acknowledging the limitations of the available data, Dr. Teo and Mr. Song note their review finds no consistent evidence of increased complications related to antidepressants.” It added, “The risks of stopping prescribed antidepressant therapy in ‘psychologically vulnerable’ patients likely outweigh any increase in complications.

Buttock Implantation Surgery Reaches New Highs

By: | Tags: , , , ,

Doctor With Rx Prescription

While breast augmentations continue to be highly sought after, there is another augmentation taking top billing in the media: Gluteal augmentation otherwise commonly known as butt implants.

Here is a glimpse into why there has been a shift.

For starters, Google searches are a clear indication as to what the new trend is in society, including plastic surgery queries. Just last month, the term “butt implants” was typed into a Google search more than 40,000 times. Around last year at this time, that monthly search number was around 27,000.

Just like couture changes with the decades, so does the silhouette and body type. Currently, a more voluminous bottom is ranking higher. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Manaj, and Kim Kardashian are changing physical fashion, not to mention aesthetic requests in a plastic surgeon’s office.

Women who generally seek gluteal implants want to enhance their backside appearance. They are often dissatisfied in how they look in their wardrobe. Their hope is that this type of procedure can transform their body and reveal a shapelier back end.

The implants utilized are oftentimes silicone filled. A skilled plastic surgeon can help add more curvature to the area by specific placement. Just like breast augmentation, the selections of implants truly come in an array of sizes and shapes.

The implant variations are critical so a woman’s body type matches proportionately with the augmentation. Each patient is different and so are their aesthetic goals.

Some women who undergo a buttock augmentation also may combine a lift, if aesthetically needed.

For those who are interested in this type of plastic surgery, it’s important to be thoughtful about pursuing it. One must make certain they want the surgery for all the right reasons, while understanding that plastic surgery is indeed a personal decision.

A potential patient must seek a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in this procedure.

During a consultation, a woman must ask pertinent questions such as how the surgery is performed, double check on the surgeon’s qualifications, and request to see a patient gallery for those who underwent the procedure.

Above all, safety is a primary concern. If the surgery is being performed in a surgical suite, be certain it is accredited by an agency such as the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.

Also during the consultation, be sure to ask about recovery time which may last up to six weeks as well as surgical and health risks.

It’s critical for plastic surgeons to inform their patients about every aspect of a surgical procedure so the patients can make informed decisions.

For those who have done their homework and have chosen the best plastic surgeon, they have been very delighted with their surgical outcome.

A Different View On Tummy Tucks

By: | Tags: , , ,

Woman Legs Silhouette With Heels Hanging Of Her Hands

Body contouring procedures can redefine an individual’s silhouette in a variety of ways. From liposuction, thigh lifts to arm lifts, people are looking at these procedures with a newfound interest and above all, hope.

Over the years, tummy tucks have garnered a great deal of attention for women undergoing a procedure called, “mommy makeover.” But there is another group who are looking into tummy tucks, also medically known as an abdominoplasty.

Those who have undergone a dramatic weight loss have sought out more information on tummy tucks. With the advent of weight loss surgeries and operative treatments, there has been a demand for after weight loss body contouring surgery.

And here’s why this is the case for both men and women.

When an individual gains a significant amount of weight, their skin stretches to accommodate it. However, when weight loss occurs in the numbers of 50 to 100 pounds, the skin is unable to recede to a person’s new shape.

When people reach their goal weight, excess skin cannot be eliminated with exercise. It will continue to sag. Instead, it must be excised in areas of the arms, thighs, and abdomen.

Tummy tucks can address redundant skin issues while removing any fat deposits. It’s advised, however, to undergo such a surgery after someone has maintained their weight anywhere from six months to a year. This way, one can be certain they are at the ideal manageable weight.

For many patients, the after weight loss body contouring surgery is the final step in their weight loss journey. It’s a time for celebration following so much commitment, diligence, and willpower.

Another point worth mentioning are the health benefits coupled with this cosmetic surgery.

Researchers have discovered that patients who undergo this body contouring surgery are more successful in maintaining their weight. Those who had the surgery were able to stay quite close to their goal whereas those who didn’t were more likely to gain weight.

While different studies have been executed around the globe, the median pounds gained per year for patients who had the surgery was one pound per year versus four pounds per year for those who elected not to have the procedure.

Seemingly, the surgery served as another level of motivation to eat well, exercise, and maintain a stable weight. And invariably this led to leading a healthier lifestyle which benefited the patients.

It’s vital to note that plastic surgery is a personal decision. It requires consideration and research.

With that said, majority of the patients who opted for this procedure did their homework and due diligence. In the same breath, it’s important for candidates to choose the right medical doctor who is board certified in plastic surgery and has expertise in after weight loss body contouring surgery.

Visiting a doctor’s patient online gallery, having a consultation, and researching patient reviews are part of the protocol.

Plastic surgery requires patience. This is why it’s important to team up with a surgeon where there is an excellent rapport. This procedure is the last step in the weight loss journey so it’s critical to have the best plastic surgeon.

Virtual Cosmetic Surgery Portal

By: | Tags: , , , ,

While the popularity of cosmetic surgery continues to climb, a virtual component to it has begun to take shape. No, this is not referring to cell phone apps where one can alter their photos and erase years. Instead, this is actually having a virtual consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon either living in a different state or abroad.

In the United States, there is an array of plastic surgeons which skill sets are specific to specialties. It appears that a new trend is not only locating a top-tier plastic surgeon but finding one that is out of state. For example, a New Yorker may want to flee the bitter cold and come to sunny San Diego during the winter months for a brief vacation and a cosmetic surgery procedure.

Progressive plastic surgeons are affording patients advanced websites where virtual consultations can be done with ease.

For patients it begins with researching a board certified surgeon in a particular state and/or city. Once one has reviewed top doctors listed regionally along with locating any accolades, they can begin to narrow their search more sharply.

Once a person has assessed that they have found a great candidate, it’s suggested they visit their website to ensure there is a virtual consultation feature. Normally on the website, one can download pictures of the area(s) they are interested in cosmetically changing or enhancing. Along with the photos, there is an area where a potential patient can convey their aesthetic wishes.

Following this submission, the plastic surgeon’s patient concierge will step in to help this navigation process. They will be in touch with the individual usually within a 24-hour period.

When the doctor assesses the photos and the patient’s “cosmetic wish list,” it is at that time when a decision is made as to whether or not to proceed with a virtual consultation. This can be done via Skype or even by phone.

During this meeting, the doctor will offer ample time to discuss the procedure in detail while answering any questions one may have. Just like a traditional in-person consultation, it is important for a potential patient to establish a nice rapport with the surgeon. Indeed, this can be done virtually.

Every step of the way, the plastic surgeon’s patient concierge will be by a patient’s side. They will assist with travel and hotel suggestions and arrangements, help coordinate any bloodwork or medical screening, and schedule a nurse to stay with a patient the first night or two after surgery.

While having a nurse isn’t mandatory, it is highly suggested. The nurse will drive the patient back to their hotel suite or other residential choice following the procedure and drive them back to the office for their first preoperative appointment the very next day. The nurse will also serve as the doctor’s primary point of contact after surgery giving the doctor frequent updates.

Listening to the doctor’s suggestions and recommendations, the patient concierge will also be able to give patients a recovery timeline and when it would be best for them to return home.

Additionally, if the patient is traveling with family members who may want to do a little sightseeing, the concierge will ensure they receive information on the top places to visit and dine.

Generally, doctors do like their patients to arrive a few days before the preoperative appointment.

In the digital age, so much has changed for the better. People are now empowered to pick the right plastic surgeon, undergo the cosmetic procedure they always wanted, and combine a mini vacation for themselves and family.

Percentages Increase With Men Seeking Cosmetic Surgery

By: | Tags: , , , , ,

FreeDigitalPhotos.net by ImageryMajestic

Step aside ladies. Cosmetic treatments and plastic surgery isn’t just for women anymore. Men are not only thinking about procedures, but they are scheduling them, too.

Cosmetic surgery is a personal decision, and something that one should be mindful about. It should not be done in haste. The journey should include consultations with various board certified plastic surgeons to ensure that a candidate is aware of the procedure they are interested in along with the recovery timeframe.

Recent numbers from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) shows that approximately 8 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed on men. While that number may not seem large at first glance, it is when this percentage of male patients has increased over 88 percent in the last 10 to 15 years.

Upon closer inspection, more than 1 million men are taking part in surgical and nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures.

The most popular procedures for men are the following:

*Male breast reduction or liposuction for this area

*Body sculpting the waistline

*Rhinoplasty surgery

*Ear tucking surgery

*Eyelid surgery

Interestingly, when men reached a certain age they opted for one of these procedures mentioned.

Typically, men who were in their forties and fifties sought eyelid surgery to rejuvenate their eye contour area. Plastic surgeons removed excess and fatty tissue on the upper eyelids and reversed any bags underneath the eyes.

And rather than scheduling a consultation for a facelift, a consultation with a board certified surgeon often reveals that a minimally invasive lower facelift can improve the signs of jowls and lift the neck.

A quick procedure with relatively short downtime, this surgery defies age.

Younger men chose the male breast reduction, rhinoplasty, ear tucking and body sculpting procedures. They are realizing that not only women are afforded these aesthetic opportunities to look and feel their best. Features they have wanted to change over the years can now be done.

During a consultation, it’s important to remember that top candidates are the following:

  • Those who live a healthy lifestyle
  • Those who do not smoke
  • Those who have realistic aesthetic expectations and goals

Another area not to be overlooked is how men are also scheduling non-operative facial rejuvenation sessions such as Botox and Juvederm. These quick procedures are lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Men who live healthy lifestyles and remain in great shape want to look as young as they feel, and they have every right to do so.

They also want to look younger in corporate America and make a great first impression in a social environment, such as dating.

On the flipside, some husbands are choosing to have a procedure around the same time as their wives. Others are seeing the rejuvenation improvements after their significant other had a surgery which spurs their interest to learn more.

One thing is for certain, men are not inclined to talk about cosmetic surgery like women do; however, it is becoming a topic which is promoting more dialogue than ever before. It’s just a matter of time before this changes, too.
